5 Keys to Writing a Great Life Sciences Blog

A Hand-Curated Bundle of Goodness

Blogs have become the standard for sharing information with the world.  Whether it’s for personal or business uses, blogs are an excellent way to let people know what you are thinking about.  Life science-based companies use blogs to share information about their business, products and services as well as a platform for expanding on topics of interest to current and potential clients.

Merriam-Webster defines a blog as follows

1  computers a website that contains online personal reflections, comments, and often hyperlinks, videos, and photographs provided by the writer; also the contents of such a site

2a regular feature appearing as part of an online publication that typically relates to a particular topic and consists of articles and personal commentary by one or more authors

Five Things to Know About Blogging:

1.     Content is king!

You can have the best-looking blog but if you don’t have the right content, your blog won’t get the views you need. Make sure your facts are in order by referencing reliable sources that back up what you’ve written.  Read what’s been put on “paper”.  Does your content match the theme/title of your blog?  If you tease your reader with one title and the content isn’t related to it, your readers will take their eyes elsewhere.

2.    Engage your audience

Once you’ve found the right content, find a way to catch and keep their attention.  Speak the language of your audience.  If you are appealing to scientists, skew your writing to the technical side.  If you’re appealing to a lay audience, find ways to explain your content so the reader can understand it.

3.    Share your point of view

Everyone has a point of view.  Share yours.  The way you write and explain the blog topic needs to have a voice.  Make sure your voice, your point of view is consistent throughout the blog and throughout all the blogs you write.

4.    Educate your reader

Teach others what you know.  No matter the topic, whether highly technical (how an immune-oncology drug kills lung cancer cells) or coming from the popular press (how drinking coffee reduces your risk for diabetes), there is something that you know that your reader doesn’t.  Share that knowledge and make sure not to talk down to your readers.

5.    Don’t forget the basics

Great content wins the day in the blog world.  However, your content needs to be discovered and read to make an impact.  Follow the basic formatting rules about highlighting your most important points; use keywords in your URL, title, and the body of your post to make it is easy to find; use images related to your content to catch the readers eye; including lots of white space; and most of all, make sure your content gets across the message you want to leave your reader with.

Your blog represents you, your company, and puts a content focused face on your business that potential and current customers will remember!
